Happy New Year!!
2025 promises to be a year of change – tentative change, for the most part. The nodes of the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune all change signs during the year, and of course we’re just starting to get used to Pluto in Aquarius. Yet although these major shifts begin in 2025, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune will dance back and forth between signs, and it isn’t until 2026 that we really settle in to Saturn and Neptune in Aries and Uranus in Gemini.
We can think of 2025 as a trial run. The planets are in a sense asking us what we will create with the new configurations, but because they will retrograde out of their new signs, we will have some time to decide. This is going to be a year of transition, a time when certainty (already a scarce commodity) is going to be lacking.
January of 2025 typifies the year. There’s a lot going on in the sky this month, and the planetary configurations would seem to call for action. Yet Mars – the planet most associated with action – is retrograde until late February. Just as we’re pushed to go forward, we are also held back a little.
The first hot aspect of the month, and year, is an opposition of Mars to Pluto on the 3rd. We can think of this as a conflict between bold creative action (Mars in Leo) and the judgement of the collective (Pluto in Aquarius). In simple terms, it is an indication for folks getting pretty hot under the collar, with potentials for explosions of one kind or another. While actually accomplishing anything might be tough, a meeting of the Sun and Pallas Athene on the same day suggests that the truth can be expressed.
The truth is not likely to be in evidence from the 5th through the 7th, when Mercury in Sagittarius squares Neptune in Pisces. This is a great time for fantasy, a meandering walk or drive, and play. However, it is about the worst time for practical decisions: not so much because people will be inclined to lie, but because a good story is likely to trump supporting facts. At the collective level we’re going to see quite a bit of hyperbole around this time.
The Cancer Full Moon is on the 13th, and it highlights matters of security and family. It’s accompanied by a nice square between Venus in Pisces and Jupiter in Gemini. Yes, squares can be nice, especially when these two BFFs get to connect with each other, and Venus is in her favorite sign. The biggest challenge is likely to be deciding which option would be best for socializing. Or perhaps it’s the risk of a little overindulgence (so much for ‘dry January’?).
The Sun enters Aquarius on the 19th at 2:59 p.m. Eastern time (19:59 GMT). He’ll be greeted by Pluto, with whom he meets on the 21st. The Sun represents the solar power, royalty, and individual strength, while Pluto in Aquarius is the power of the masses. We’ll see how it goes…
It’s Mercury’s turn to meet with Pluto on the 29th, the day of the Aquarius New Moon, and well within the orb of Uranus’ station to go direct on the 30th. This is a time of speaking truth to power, but also a time of impulsiveness and a strong need for independence. At best, we can look at the end of January as an opportunity for a fresh start, at worst, we’ll see folks kicking over the negotiation table and retrenching to their base.
